APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (ABA)

WHAT IS APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (“ABA”)?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to teaching new skills and behaviors, which research has shown to be an effective intervention for individuals with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

This approach looks at what is happening in the environment that affects the way people behave and learn, and what can be changed in order to help someone behave in new ways and learn new skills.  For example, positive reinforcement is used in order to increase how often new skills are used by the child.

ABA uses a variety of specific strategies and procedures based on these behavioral principles in order to address skills across developmental areas, including communication, social interaction, cognitive & play skills, as well as challenging behavior.
